18K Cartier New York Tank

18K Cartier New York Tank
Sold out

Please find this 18K Cartier New York Tank from the 1970s in great condition with a Singer dial. This piece houses a stamped Cartier 2541 movement, which is exceedingly rare. The 2541 movement is manual winding and produced in the 1970s.

Most similarly, the “Steve McQueen” Cartier Tank Allongée are cited and documented to retain the 2540/1 movement (“The Thomas Crown Timepieces” by Mason & Sons), which were also retailed by Cartier New York in the 60s and early 70s with a similar design. These New York tank allongée models are highly sought after as they were featured in the Steve McQueen film and were modeled after the Cintrée. This New York tank houses the same Cartier stamped movement.

The case on this Tank has the original Cartier New York inventory number on the lug along with a numbered stamp on the clasp. The case back is also marked “Cartier New York” on the inside and measures 36x22mm w/lugs.

The dial maintains a slanted Singer stamp on the backside, who most famously produced experimental designs (notably for Rolex with the Paul Newman Dial from the 1960s-1980s). According to Bulang & Sons in their Singer article that also references and uses a photo of Steve Mcqueen, “In the 60s multiple brands asked the dial producer Singer to design new studies to enter a new era for watches. Times were slowly moving into the funky 70s.” Since the Singer stamp is almost never seen on a Cartier watch, this particular piece is an extremely rare design from the 1970s Steve Mcqueen era.

Given that it’s a New York tank, and I live nearby the 5th Ave Cartier Mansion, I took it to the store and the representative said he’d take it to the back. He told me that he had shown it to an in-house expert who had been there “for over 30 years” and that nothing looked wrong to them. Please note that they did not open the watch and told me that they would not be able to truly authenticate it or provide any further details because that’s not a service that Cartier offers.

Please note there is a small damage on the bottom right of the crystal and reach out for more buying info or photos!
